Operation North Sea, 1944-’45 in Zeebrugge
Operation North Sea, 1944-’45 in Zeebrugge
Operation North Sea, 1944-’45 was officially inaugurated within the Seafront complex in Zeebrugge last year and presents the battle of the River Scheldt (October-November 1944). Visitors experience this particular stage in the Second World War through pictures, maps, film footage and collection items.
The exhibition - conceived and developed by the War Heritage Institute - illustrates the liberation of the Scheldt estuary, and up till now unreleased pictures show what life was like behind the Atlantic Wall. Some centre-stage elements, such as a unique original Canadian armoured vehicle and an anti-aircraft gun from war ship HMS Roberts, are WHI loan outs. Operation North Sea, 1944-’45 also highlights underwater heritage. Hundreds of objects and shipwrecks indeed are still to be found on the sea floor.
“Operation North Sea 1944-45” is a joint operation between the War Heritage Institute, the Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee, Westtoer and Seafront, with financial support from the Flemish Government and the National Lottery.
